Does it feel like sometimes life is moving at the speed of light, and it doesn’t slow down?
Are you expected to make huge, ,life-deciding or life-changing decisions and there’s no way to study for the right answer?
Do you need help finding ways to say the hard things out loud or regulating your emotions through uncomfortable moments?
We can help with expert, evidence-based, and collaborative approaches to help you find the tools and skills to promote a happy and healthy life.
Is therapy for teens or young adults the right decision?
If you feel like you’re struggling with:
A hard time making friends
Unexplained mood changes
A hard time identifying or regulating emotions
Low self-esteem or low body image
Trouble in school
A recent traumatic or stressful event
New, risky behaviors
Or anything else you may deem as a negative or worrisome.
Starting therapy might be the right choice.
Our approaches to therapy for teenagers and young adults:
We use a blend of modalities and interventions that are evidence-based and appropriate to whatever needs are identified. We work to provide you with skills and communication styles that help you move through tough emotions and develop the ability to advocate for your needs and wants. We also work to identify early connections to thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that you don’t like, understand where they came from, and create a perspective shift that allows you to work with these feelings rather than against them for a fuller understanding of self and identity.
How we help:
A lot of times, life doesn’t necessarily give you a fair starting point, leaving you to try and read the map while going 80 MPH. We can carry over old habits or beliefs from our parents or traditions that don’t serve us in today’s world, or create bigger ruptures with our loved ones than we intend.
Other times, you can feel like we just simply don’t have the tools needed to manage the big emotions or thoughts, leaving you feeling powerless while the world is still expecting you to make arguably the biggest decisions of your life.
We help by providing you with meaningful skills and tools you can take throughout your entire life to address life’s biggest stressors. We can help you challenge negative self-views and explore your values in priorities to sort through the chaos. We can help build your voice to where you advocate for yourself and others in a way that feels good to you.
I have questions about therapy for teenagers and young adults
How do I know if my teenager or the young adult in my life needs therapy?
We are thankfully walking into a world where younger generations are more open and accepting of help and trying out mental health care before maybe previous generations did. However, symptoms and effects of struggles, disorders, and major life events still sometimes make it hard for anyone to reach out. If your teen or young adult has had sudden mood changes, loss of interest in hobbies, seems more agitated, is struggling with their identity, or anything else that has them emotionally struggling to get through, therapy might be highly beneficial.
If my teenager is under the age of 18, will I be involved in their therapy?
While we want to hear if there are any major concerns or useful background information, we do ask that the therapeutic process happen largely between client and therapist. We do involve parents and caregivers where appropriate, but if there seems to be a need for conjoint sessions, check out our family therapy services.
Why are young adults being lumped in with teenagers here?
Yes, a 16-year-old is in a very different space than a 24-year-old. However, if we zoom out, we can see a lot of similar struggles. Both individuals are navigating how they want to “handle” life, relationships, and decision-making. You’re both figuring out your values and priorities in life, and sifting through some major life-defining decisions. You’re both deciding what to take with you and what to leave behind from your family of origin, and creating a life you’re happy with. So while we will never assume young adults are the same as teens, life is chaotic, and both deserve healthy foundations.
